IWA Nutrient Removal and Recovery Specialist Conference

17-21 November 2024
Voco Hotel, Brisbane, Australia

Pre-Conference Workshops

Workshop 1: Engineering meets Microbiology for Optimisation of full-scale processes – BNR myths-facts-reality

This training session is an extract from the Activated Sludge and Biological Nutrient Reduction Short Course that has bee(n) offered to industry delegates for almost three decades, at Griffith University, Australia.

The training will provide the basis for practical applications of decision making for parameters that vary in the activated sludge models (or are unexplained in the current models).  Evidence based case studies will be discussed and worked through in class-room style.  Worksheets and case studies will be provided to participants for take home material as a working manual that will assist in forming the bases of further application or training.  One important outcome will be establishing communication pathways between the two disciplines at the core of activated sludge modelling and control.

Date: Sunday 17 November
Time: 1pm-3pm
Location: Voco Hotel
Cost: AU$50

Workshop 2: Towards net zero: Connected thinking on minimising NRR process emissions

In a world café format, the session will provide a forum for interdisciplinary practitioners and researchers to discuss GHG process emissions, specifically nitrous oxide and methane in nutrient removal and recovery (NRR) processes. The session will last for 90 minutes, with the first half comprising informative short ‘pitches’ from experienced practitioners and researchers. They will share experience, best practice, and ideas along with candid reflections on challenges, and next steps around these themes.

1. Emissions quantification

2. Emissions modelling

3. Emissions mitigation

4. Emissions accounting and reporting.

The second half of the session will be devoted to discussion and generating tangible outputs. Participants will have moderator led round table discussions to share questions, challenges, and ideas. The Chair will then draw everyone together for a harvest and reflection session where participants can share key insights and themes from their conversations.  These will be collated and disseminated following the session.

Date: Sunday 17 November
Time: 1pm-3pm
Location: Voco Hotel
Cost: AU$50
